During the winter season it’s all to common for a child to catch a cold, the flu or some other ailment and be home sick from school, camped out on the sofa. It’s not easy for your child or for you either, when this happens. Sick kids easily turn into cranky and bored kids. How can you help your young patient recover quickly and make the best of their recovery?
An easy solution is always television. Let’s face it, what better time to allow your child to overdo television time than when they are sick and really shouldn’t be running around and active? Just moderate the shows or movies they are watching – go for calm, peaceful story lines and happy endings. And, even though it’s an easy fix, do limit television time and fit in actual bed rest and naps as much as possible. Rest really is the best medicine.
When it comes to video gaming or computer gaming, I don’t think it should be allowed when the kids are home sick. Kids can really get wound up when playing on a laptop, and it’s not conducive to rest and recovery. The same goes for allowing your older children access to their social media accounts when they are home sick. Along those same lines, as a parent it’s important to gauge when your child is really sick enough to stay home. Some kids have been known to over play their symptoms in a bid to fit in a little extra gaming or socializing, or just to spend the day relaxing!
