With all the input from electronics and mobile devices these days, it’s very easy to let reading fall to the wayside. When everyone is tired after a long day, the instant gratification of turning on the flat screen television can be very tempting. But, even though our technology is wonderful to have and helps us immensely, its wise to moderate family usage. And, especially for the youngest members of the family, it is so important to encourage and nurture the wonderful pleasure of reading. A habit of reading learned young will last a lifetime!
For the youngest family members, one great way to encourage reading in your household is to create a special reading nook or area. You can make your reading nook in almost any room you have a spare corner. Set up a comfy little corner with a small throw rug, some comfy pillows, good lighting and of course, plenty of books. Or, designate a certain cozy chair or recliner as “the reading chair”. Make sure to have a good lamp and easy access to books and perhaps a snuggly blanket.
Make some time to read aloud to your little one in the cozy reading nook for just a few minutes in the evenings before bed, or let your slightly older kids read aloud to you, and soon it will be a fun treat your youngsters look forward to. Chances are, you will find yourself enjoying that time together just as much as they do.
